The Seattle Mariners have been one of the hottest teams in baseball posting a 41-19 record in a 60 game span. Now they head to Cleveland and take on the 1st place AL Central Guardians in a 3-game series. Here is my complete prediction and breakdown.
MARINERS CONTINUE THEIR MAYHEM
Seattle have been on a roll, winning 11 of their last 15 games and only lose back-to-back games once since the middle of August. Last series against Cleveland they took 3 of 4 including finishing with a 4-0 shutout. The Mariners took care of business in game 1 of this series winning 6 runs to 1. The Mariners new pickup Luis Castillo there 6 great innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits and just 1 walk.
Nothing about the Marines overall offensive numbers stand out, posting the 25th best batting average on the year with .231, 16th best on base percentage of .313 scoring the 18th most runs per game with 4.2. Yet the Mariners continue to win games, a big reason behind this is their pitching staff. Coming into this one the Mariners are allowing the 5th fewest runs per game with 3.8. In their last 10 games opponents are batting just .214 against the Mariners arms, as they throw a combined 2.27 ERA.
On the mound for this one is CY Young winner Robbie Ray. Whilst things weren’t perfect when Robbie first moved to Seattle he has settled in now and is playing great. Coming into this one he has a 11-8 record over 155.2 innings of work, leaving him with a 3.59 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 180 strikeouts. In his last 3 starts he is 3-0 with an ERA of 1.37 allowing just 3 runs.
GUARDIANS FALLING
The Cleveland Guardians are coming into this game on a 3-game losing streak. They were shutout in back-to-back games by the Orioles and scored just 1 run in game 1 of this series. Despite this the Guardians still find themselves atop of the AL Central posting a 68-62 record.
The Guardians have a solid team all-round, scoring 4.2 runs per game (18th in the MLB) and allowing just 4 (8th in the league). Jose Ramirez continues to carry the team with 106 RBI’s to go along side 26 homers on the season. The Guardians have been struggling to put runs on the board lately, in their last 5 games they are batting a combined .171 at the plate scoring just 1.84 runs per game.
The Cleveland pitching staff has been doing their job in this slump, throwing a combined ERA of 3.07 in the last 5. Taking the mound in this one is 24-year-old rookie Xzavion Curry. In his first career start Curry went 5 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 runs to the Tigers.
MAKE IT FOUR
There is no reason here that makes me think the Guardians are winning this game. They are in the midst of big pitching slump scoring just 1.84 runs per game in their last 5 and now they have to up against Robbie Ray who is throwing the ball the best he has this season. Whilst the under does seem appealing, I can’t justify it at 7.5 so I am trusting in Seattle to take advantage of a rookie in Curry and get another win.
