The MLB trade deadline has seen some big moves, the Yankees and Cardinals are two of those teams who have transcended their rosters. Now they meet for a 3-game series in St Louis starting with Nestor Cortes and Dakota Hudson facing off. Here is my complete prediction and breakdown.
Yankees Look to Break 2-Game Losing Streak
The New York Yankees are front-runners for the World Series and for good reason. They are dominant on both sides of play, ranking 3rd in the league in ERA and runs allowed with 3.25 and 3.4 respectively. They are 1st in homers with 185 on the season and 1st in runs per game with 5.3. Despite all of this the Yankees managed to improve their roster this trade deadline. They added starter Frankie Montas, relievers Lou Trivino and Scott Effross as well as centerfielder Harrison Bader. The Yankees have lost 2 straight games but are coming into this with 2 days rest.
Aaron Judge is having a MVP Caliber season, leading the Yankees with 43 home-runs and 93 RBI’s, Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton also have 60+ RBI’s on the season.
Taking the mound for this game is “Nasty” Nestor Cortes who is coming in with a 9-3 record over 106.2 innings of work. All this resulting in a 2.53 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 111 strikeouts. In the month of July, Cortes went 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA. The Yankees won five of his six starts in the month. He has allowed just 3 runs combined in his last 3 starts.
Cards Are Pushing
The St Louis Cardinals made good moves before the trade-deadline adding lefties Jordan Montgomery of the Yankees and Jose Quintana from the Pirates. The Cardinals are playing good ball as of late, winning 4-straight and 7-3 in their last 10. In their last 5 games the Cardinals are batting at .275, scoring 5.93 runs per game as well as hitting 2.2 homers per game.
For the season the Cardinals are 7th in runs per game with 4.6, 6th in batting average (.252) and on base percentage (.321). 1st baseman Paul Goldschmidt leads the team with 26 homers and 82 RBI’s whilst teammate Nolan Arenado has 63 RBI’s so far.
Right-hander Dakota Hudson will take the mound for the Cardinals in this one posting a 6-6 record, 4.10 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 54K’s and 44 walks over 101 innings of work. It is safe to say that this hasn’t been Hudson’s best season. He has 6+ hits in 4 of his last 6 games and is struggling with his walk to strikeout ratio.
Snapping Streaks
This game features two teams who have big post-season aspirations but it also features a big pitching matchup. the Cardinals come in after a doubleheader on Thursday. The Yankees will also be sending out Cortes, which is always a lucky charm for the Bombers. New York is 6-1 in Cortes' last seven starts this season. Cortes is 5-3 on the road this season with a 2.89 ERA. I am happy to take the Yankees after 2 losses to bounce back and grab one against a struggling pitcher in Dakota Hudson.
