The week of the U.S. Open is upon us and with a stacked field featuring World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory Mcllroy fresh of a win, defending champion Jon Rahm and PGA Champion Justin Thomas, which should make this one to remember. Here are my 3 picks absolutely free.
We almost know what to expect at the U.S. Open which is thick rough, difficult scoring and course setup. We can use this knowledge, plus with past experience, that winners of the U.S Open usually come from the worlds best.
Best Bet: Xander Schauffele Top 20
Maybe not most peoples first choice, but Xander has a great history at the U.S. Open. His season so far has been rather strange, staying mostly in the middle group and has not yet made a push for a win. Paired with Patrick Cantlay at the the Zurich Classic however he did manage to flip the switch and grab the victory. Since that win at Zurich, he has gone T5 at Byron Nelson, T13 at Southern Hills and T18 at Memorial. Despite his quiet play this season he holds up statistically, ranking ninth in total strokes gained this season, including marks of seventh from tee to green (+1.411 per round), 12th on approach (+0.719), and 30th around the green (+0.319) which like we said, at this course, is vital to success.
Looking at previous U.S. Open results Xander has had some of his best performances yet. With five career starts he has finished in the top 5 three times and his worst performance is…. T7.
Further to the results themselves, Xander clearly has the mental game needed to not let a U.S. Open course get the best of him. Combine that with his major championship pedigree and trending form and you have the recipe for a winner in Brookline. Whilst betting Xander to win can lead you to a big pay day, we are playing the safe option and taking him to finish in the Top 20.
